What Happened? Returning to the Old Paths

As we enter October, we invite you to join us for 31 days of prayer, reflection, and spiritual renewal.
Throughout this month, our Sunday morning messages will examine four important questions: What happened to the community? What happened to the church? What happened to our Christ? And how can we return to the old paths that God has established?
This prayer guide is designed to prepare our hearts for each Sunday message and challenge us to live out the truths of God's Word throughout the week.
Our desire is not simply to return to the way things used to be, but to return to the biblical principles that have never changed.
May God use these 31 days to strengthen our families, revive our church, reach our community, and draw us closer to Jesus Christ.

DAY 1 | Thursday, October 1
Lord, Begin With Me

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Devotional
Before we ask what happened to our community, we must first examine what has happened in our own hearts.
It is easy to look around and see everything that is wrong with the world. We see broken families, struggling neighbors, division, and people who seem to have forgotten God. We may even find ourselves longing for the days when communities were closer and people looked out for one another.
But David's prayer reminds us that spiritual renewal begins with personal examination.
We cannot expect our community to become more loving if we refuse to love. We cannot expect others to demonstrate kindness if we are unwilling to show kindness ourselves. We cannot expect our neighbors to seek God while we neglect our own relationship with Him.
Perhaps the greatest change our community needs is for God's people to become the people He has called us to be.
Today, instead of asking God to change everyone around you, ask Him to begin His work in your own heart.
Prayer Focus
Ask God to reveal anything in your life that prevents you from being a godly influence in your community.
Today's Prayer
Heavenly Father, search my heart today. Reveal the attitudes, habits, and sins that hinder my relationship with You. Help me stop focusing only on the problems around me and begin addressing the things that need to change within me. Make me a faithful witness of Your love and grace. Let the change I desire to see in my community begin in my own life. In Jesus' name, Amen.

DAY 2 | Friday, October 2
Whatever Happened to Loving Our Neighbors?
Scripture Mark 12:30–31 (KJV)
And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
Devotional
There was a time when neighbors knew one another, checked on one another, and helped one another through difficult seasons.
While communities and lifestyles have changed, God's commandment to love our neighbors has not.
Jesus did not tell us to love only those who agree with us, attend our church, or share our interests. He commanded us to love our neighbors as ourselves.
That means noticing the elderly neighbor who lives alone, the family struggling to make ends meet, the single parent who needs encouragement, and the person who may be quietly carrying a burden that nobody else knows about.
Loving our neighbors requires more than kind words. It requires action.
Sometimes the greatest opportunity to demonstrate the love of Christ comes through a simple act of kindness.
Who has God placed in your life that needs to experience His love through you?
Prayer Focus
Pray for your neighbors by name. Ask God to give you an opportunity to demonstrate His love to someone today.
Today's Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I have been too busy to notice the needs of those around me. Help me love my neighbors as You have commanded. Open my eyes to those who are hurting, lonely, or struggling. Give me a willing heart and helping hands. May my actions reflect the love of Jesus Christ. In His name, Amen.

DAY 3 | Saturday, October 3
A Community That Needs Jesus

But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.
Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;
Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

When Jesus looked upon the multitudes, He saw more than a crowd of people. He saw their spiritual condition.
He saw people who were weary, scattered, and in need of a shepherd.
When we look at our community, what do we see?
Do we see people who frustrate us? People who make poor decisions? People whose lives are filled with problems?
Or do we see souls who need Jesus?
Our community is filled with people facing broken relationships, addiction, financial struggles, grief, and uncertainty. Yet their greatest need is the salvation that can only be found in Jesus Christ.
Jesus did not respond to the multitudes with indifference. He was moved with compassion.
Tomorrow, as we gather for worship, let us remember that our church has been placed in this community for a purpose.
We are not simply here to maintain a building or hold weekly services. We are here to proclaim the Gospel and reach people for Christ.
Prayer Focus
Pray for the lost throughout Caldwell, Forrest City, Wynne, Colt, and our surrounding communities. Pray that God will use our church to reach them.
Today's Prayer
Heavenly Father, give me a heart of compassion for the people around me. Help me see beyond their circumstances and recognize their need for Jesus. I pray for those in our community who are lost and without hope. Prepare their hearts to receive the Gospel. Raise up faithful laborers within our church, and use us to share the good news of salvation. In Jesus' name, Amen.

DAY 4 | Sunday, October 4
What Happened to the Community?
Scripture Galatians 6:2 (KJV)
“Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.”
Devotional
Today, as we gather for worship, we will consider an important question: What happened to the community?
Communities are made up of people, and people carry burdens.
Behind the doors of homes throughout our community are families facing sickness, financial difficulties, strained marriages, grief, loneliness, and uncertainty about tomorrow.
Some carry their burdens openly. Others suffer quietly.
God never intended for His people to live without concern for one another.
The command to bear one another's burdens reminds us that Christian love requires us to enter into the difficulties of others with compassion, prayer, and practical assistance.
A strong community is not one where nobody experiences problems. It is one where people refuse to allow their neighbors to face those problems alone.
As you worship today, ask God to help you become the kind of person who strengthens the community around you.
Prayer Focus
Pray for today's worship service and sermon. Ask God to burden our church with a renewed love for our community.
Today's Prayer
Lord, thank You for placing our church in this community. Help us recognize the responsibility You have given us to love, serve, and reach the people around us. Bless our worship today. What Happened to the Family?

“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

A community is only as strong as the families and individuals who make it up.
Today, many families are facing tremendous challenges. Marriages are strained, parents are overwhelmed, children are growing up surrounded by conflicting messages, and family members sometimes struggle to find time for one another.
Joshua understood the importance of making a deliberate decision about the spiritual direction of his household.
His declaration was not simply a statement about attending religious services. It was a commitment that his household would serve the Lord.
Every family has its own struggles, and no household is perfect. Yet every family can make the decision to place God at the center of its life.
Whether your household includes children, grandchildren, a spouse, or you live alone, you can establish a home where God's Word is honored, prayer is practiced, and Christ is glorified.
The restoration of our community begins in the homes of people who are willing to serve the Lord.
Prayer Focus
Pray for the families of our church and community, especially those experiencing conflict, separation, or spiritual difficulties.
Today's Prayer
Heavenly Father, I lift up the families of our community. Strengthen marriages, guide parents, protect children, and restore relationships that have been damaged. Help our homes become places of prayer, forgiveness, and biblical instruction. Give us the courage to declare, as Joshua did, that our households will serve the Lord. In Jesus' name, Amen.

DAY 6 | Tuesday, October 6
What Happened to Helping One Another?
Scripture 1 John 3:17–18 (KJV)
But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
Devotional
It is easy to tell someone that we care about them. It is another thing entirely to demonstrate that care through our actions.
John reminds believers that genuine Christian love must be expressed in practical ways.
There are people in our community who need food, transportation, encouragement, assistance with household responsibilities, or simply someone willing to listen.
We cannot meet every need, but we can respond faithfully to the opportunities God places before us.
Sometimes helping someone requires a financial sacrifice. Other times, it simply requires giving a little of our time.
When God's people demonstrate compassion, they provide a visible testimony of the love of Christ.
Do not underestimate what God can accomplish through one simple act of kindness.
Prayer Focus
Pray for those facing financial hardship, unemployment, hunger, and other practical needs.
Today's Prayer
Lord, give me a generous and compassionate heart. Help me recognize the needs of others and respond according to the ability You have given me. Bless those who are struggling financially and provide for families who are uncertain about tomorrow. Use our church to demonstrate Your love through practical acts of service. In Jesus' name, Amen.

DAY 7 | Wednesday, October 7
What Happened to Reaching the Next Generation?
Scripture Psalm 78:4 (KJV)
“We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.”
Devotional
The next generation will not automatically know the truths of God's Word simply because previous generations believed them.
Someone must teach them.
Children and teenagers are growing up in a world filled with competing voices. They need faithful parents, grandparents, teachers, and church members who will consistently point them toward Jesus Christ.
Our responsibility is greater than providing activities or entertainment. We must faithfully communicate the Gospel and teach young people how to follow Christ.
Tonight, as our AWANA ministry gathers, remember that every child who enters our church is a soul who needs to hear God's Word.
The lessons they learn today may influence their decisions for the rest of their lives.
Investing in the next generation is one of the most important ways we can strengthen our community.
Prayer Focus
Pray for our AWANA ministry, children, teenagers, parents, teachers, and volunteers.
Today's Prayer
Heavenly Father, I pray for the children and teenagers of our community. Protect them from harmful influences and surround them with faithful Christian examples. Bless our AWANA ministry and every volunteer who teaches Your Word. Help us faithfully share the Gospel with the next generation so that they may know, love, and serve Jesus Christ. Amen.
DAY 8 | Thursday, October 8
What Happened to Forgiveness?
Scripture Ephesians 4:31–32 (KJV)
Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
Devotional
Many relationships are damaged not because people have never loved one another, but because they have allowed bitterness and unforgiveness to grow.
A disagreement between neighbors can become a lifelong feud. A misunderstanding between family members can result in years of silence. Even within the church, unresolved conflict can damage fellowship.
Paul reminds us that believers are called to demonstrate the same spirit of forgiveness that God has extended to us through Jesus Christ.
Forgiveness does not mean pretending that wrongdoing never occurred or allowing harmful behavior to continue. It means surrendering bitterness and responding in a manner consistent with God's Word.
Sometimes the first step toward restoring a relationship is simply being willing to have a conversation.
Is there someone you need to forgive? Is there someone from whom you need to seek forgiveness?
Prayer Focus
Pray for broken relationships, divided families, and unresolved conflicts throughout our community.
Today's Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I have allowed bitterness to remain in my heart. Help me extend forgiveness to those who have hurt me and give me humility to seek forgiveness when I have wronged others. Bring healing to broken relationships within our families, church, and community. Teach us to be kind, tenderhearted, and forgiving. In Jesus' name, Amen.

DAY 9 | Friday, October 9
What Happened to Being a Light?
Scripture Matthew 5:14–16 (KJV)
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Devotional
Jesus did not call His followers to hide their faith from the world.
He called them to be a light.
Our community should be able to see the difference that Jesus Christ makes in our lives through our conduct, our conversations, our compassion, and our willingness to stand for biblical truth.
Being a light does not mean drawing attention to ourselves. Jesus said that our good works should cause others to glorify our heavenly Father.
Our goal is not to convince people that we are better than they are. Our goal is to point them toward the Savior who has changed our lives.
Every interaction is an opportunity to represent Christ.
Whether you are at work, in a store, visiting a neighbor, or spending time with your family, remember that someone may be watching how you live.
Let them see Jesus in you.

Pray that the members of our church will be faithful Christian witnesses throughout our community.
Today's Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me be a faithful light in a world that desperately needs You. Guard my words, guide my actions, and help me demonstrate the character of Jesus Christ. May the people around me see Your love through my life and be drawn toward the truth of the Gospel. In Jesus' name, Amen.

A Community Begins With a Church That Cares

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
Devotional
Serving others is not always easy.
Sometimes our efforts seem unnoticed. Sometimes the people we try to help do not respond as we hoped. Sometimes we become discouraged because the needs around us seem greater than our ability to meet them.
Paul reminds us not to grow weary in doing good.
Our responsibility is to remain faithful in the opportunities God gives us.
We may not be able to change our entire community overnight, but we can continue loving our neighbors, encouraging struggling families, reaching children, and sharing the Gospel.
Tomorrow, we will turn our attention toward another important question: What happened to the church?
As we prepare for that message, remember that a church that genuinely cares for its community must first be a congregation that faithfully loves and serves one another.

Pray that our church will remain faithful in serving others and preparing hearts for tomorrow's worship.

Lord, thank You for the opportunities You have given our church to serve this community. Help us remain faithful even when the work is difficult or the results are not immediately visible. What Happened to the Church?
Scripture Matthew 16:18 (KJV)
“And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

Today, we turn our attention toward the church.
The church is not simply a building, a social organization, or a weekly gathering. It belongs to Jesus Christ.
He is the One who established His church, and He is the One who promised to build it.
Throughout history, churches have faced persecution, division, discouragement, and spiritual decline. Yet the promise of Christ remains unchanged.
Our responsibility is not to reinvent the church according to the preferences of the world. Our responsibility is to remain faithful to the Lord who established it.
As we gather for worship today, let us examine our priorities.
Are we committed to God's Word? Are we united in our love for Christ? Are we faithfully carrying out the Great Commission?
The church belongs to Jesus. May everything we do bring honor and glory to Him.
Prayer Focus
Pray for today's sermon, our pastor, church leaders, teachers, volunteers, and every member of our congregation.
Today's Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the church that Jesus Christ established. Help us remember that this congregation belongs to You. What Happened to Faithfulness?
Scripture Hebrews 10:24–25 (KJV)
And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Devotional
Church attendance is about more than occupying a seat in a building.
When believers gather, they worship God, receive instruction from His Word, encourage one another, and strengthen their fellowship.
The writer of Hebrews reminds us that assembling together is an important part of the Christian life.
When we neglect fellowship with other believers, we miss opportunities to receive encouragement and to encourage others.
Our presence matters.
The person sitting beside you may be facing a difficult season. Your kindness, prayers, and words of encouragement may be exactly what they need.
Faithfulness is not about maintaining a perfect attendance record. It is about recognizing the importance of gathering with God's people and making worship and fellowship a priority.
Prayer Focus
Pray for those who have become disconnected from church fellowship. Ask God to strengthen our commitment to gathering together.
Today's Prayer
Lord, help me remain faithful in worship, fellowship, and service. Forgive me when I allow unnecessary distractions to take priority over my relationship with You and Your church. Encourage those who have become distant from the congregation and help us lovingly reach out to them. Strengthen our desire to worship together and encourage one another. In Jesus' name, Amen.

What Happened to Unity?
Scripture Ephesians 4:1–3 (KJV)
I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Devotional
A church is made up of people with different backgrounds, personalities, opinions, and experiences.
Because we are human, disagreements will sometimes occur.
Yet Paul reminds believers that unity is something we must actively seek to preserve.
Biblical unity does not require us to abandon sound doctrine or pretend that differences do not exist. It requires humility, patience, love, and a shared commitment to Jesus Christ.
When personal preferences become more important than the mission of the church, division can begin to take root.
We must remember that we are not competing against one another. We are fellow servants of the same Lord.
A united church can accomplish much for the cause of Christ when its members work together in love.
Prayer Focus
Pray for unity among our church members, ministry teams, and leadership.
Today's Prayer
Heavenly Father, protect our church from unnecessary division. Help us demonstrate humility, patience, and love toward one another. When disagreements arise, give us wisdom to respond according to Your Word. Unite our hearts around the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the mission You have entrusted to our congregation. Amen.

DAY 14 | Wednesday, October 14
What Happened to Discipleship?
Scripture Matthew 28:19–20 (KJV)
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Devotional
The mission of the church does not end when someone makes a profession of faith.
Jesus commanded His followers to make disciples, baptize believers, and teach them to observe His commandments.
A healthy church is committed to helping people grow in their knowledge of God's Word and their obedience to Jesus Christ.
Discipleship takes place through preaching, Bible study, Sunday School, AWANA, personal conversations, and the example of mature believers.
We must not be satisfied with simply gathering a crowd. Our desire should be to see people saved, baptized, taught, and equipped to serve the Lord.
Every member has a role in helping others grow spiritually.
Who are you encouraging in their walk with Christ?
Prayer Focus
Pray for our Sunday School, AWANA, Bible studies, teachers, and everyone involved in helping others grow spiritually.
Today's Prayer
Lord, help our church remain faithful to the Great Commission. Give us a burden to reach the lost and a commitment to disciple those who come to faith in Christ. Bless every teacher and ministry leader who faithfully shares Your Word. Help us grow in spiritual maturity and encourage others to follow Jesus. In His name, Amen.
DAY 15 | Thursday, October 15
What Happened to Serving?
Scripture 1 Peter 4:10 (KJV)
“As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.”
Devotional
God has given every believer opportunities and abilities that can be used for His glory.
Some are gifted teachers. Others are encouragers, organizers, helpers, or people who faithfully serve behind the scenes.
Not every ministry takes place behind a pulpit.
Someone must prepare classrooms, welcome visitors, care for children, maintain facilities, operate equipment, visit the sick, and assist those in need.
Every act of faithful service matters.
The church functions as God intends when its members recognize that ministry is not the responsibility of only a few people.
We have all been called to serve.
Rather than asking what the church can do for us, we should also ask how God desires to use us to strengthen His church.
Prayer Focus
Pray for our church volunteers and ministry teams. Ask God to reveal where you can serve.
Today's Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gifts and opportunities You have given me. Help me use them faithfully for Your glory. Bless every volunteer and ministry worker in our church, especially those whose service often goes unnoticed. Give us willing hearts and help each of us find our place in the work of Your kingdom. DAY 16 | Friday, October 16
What Happened to Prayer?
Scripture Acts 2:42 (KJV)
“And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.”
Devotional
Prayer was not an occasional activity in the early church. It was an essential part of the believers' lives together.
They understood that their strength did not come from their numbers, resources, or abilities.
Their dependence was upon God.
Churches today can become so occupied with planning activities, maintaining facilities, and organizing ministries that prayer receives less attention than it deserves.
Yet no amount of human effort can replace our need for God's power and guidance.
We need prayer in our homes, prayer in our personal lives, and prayer throughout the ministries of our church.
Before we ask God to bless our plans, we should seek His will.
A praying church is a church that acknowledges its dependence upon the Lord.
Prayer Focus
Pray for a renewed commitment to personal, family, and congregational prayer.
Today's Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I have depended upon my own strength instead of seeking You in prayer. Teach me to bring every concern, decision, and burden before Your throne. Renew a spirit of prayer within our church. Help us seek Your wisdom and depend upon Your power in everything we do. In Jesus' name, Amen.

What Happened to Our First Love?
Scripture Revelation 2:4–5 (KJV)
Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.
Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.
Devotional
The church at Ephesus had many commendable qualities, but Jesus identified a serious spiritual problem: they had left their first love.
It is possible to remain busy with religious activities while allowing our love for Christ to grow cold.
We can attend services, serve on committees, participate in ministries, and maintain traditions while neglecting the personal relationship with Jesus that should motivate everything we do.
Tomorrow, our sermon will ask an important question: What happened to our Christ?
As we prepare for that message, we must examine whether Jesus remains the central focus of our lives and our church.
Our greatest need is not simply more activity. It is a renewed love for the Savior.
Prayer Focus
Ask God to renew your personal love for Jesus Christ and prepare our congregation for tomorrow's worship.
Today's Prayer
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have allowed my love for You to grow cold. Help me remember the joy of my salvation and the grace You have shown me through Jesus Christ. Remove anything that has taken His rightful place in my heart. Prepare our church for tomorrow's worship and renew our devotion to our Savior. In Jesus' name, Amen.

DAY 18 | Sunday, October 18
What Happened to Our Christ?
Scripture Colossians 1:17–18 (KJV)
And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
Devotional
Jesus Christ has not changed.
He is still the eternal Son of God, the Savior of sinners, the risen Lord, and the Head of His church.
The question is not whether Christ has lost His power or His position. The question is whether we have allowed other things to take His rightful place in our lives.
Paul reminds us that Christ is to have the preeminence in all things.
That means He must be more important than our personal preferences, traditions, ambitions, and worldly pursuits.
A church may have beautiful facilities, successful programs, and a full calendar, but if Jesus Christ is no longer its central focus, it has lost sight of its purpose.

What Happened to the Cross?

The cross of Jesus Christ is the foundation of the Gospel message.
At Calvary, the sinless Son of God willingly gave His life as the sacrifice for our sins.
The cross reminds us of the seriousness of sin, the holiness of God, and the immeasurable love demonstrated through the death of Jesus Christ.
We must never become so occupied with religious activities that we lose sight of the sacrifice that makes our salvation possible.
The message of the cross is not outdated.
Our community still needs to hear that Jesus died for sinners, was buried, and rose again on the third day.
The church must never replace the Gospel with a message that merely makes people feel better about themselves.
Our greatest hope is found in the crucified and risen Savior.
Prayer Focus
Thank God for the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Pray that our church will faithfully proclaim the Gospel.
Today's Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your Son to die for my sins. Help me never take the sacrifice of Calvary for granted. What Happened to Repentance?

“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;”

The Gospel is a message of grace, mercy, and forgiveness, but it also calls sinners to repentance.
Repentance involves a change of mind concerning sin and a turning toward God.
We cannot truly understand the greatness of God's grace until we recognize the seriousness of our sin.
The same Savior who welcomes sinners also calls them to turn from sin and follow Him.
As believers, we must continue examining our lives in the light of God's Word.
When the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin, our response should not be to excuse it, minimize it, or blame someone else.
We should confess it and seek God's forgiveness.
A renewed relationship with Christ begins with a heart that is willing to respond to His Word.
Prayer Focus
Ask God to reveal unconfessed sin and give you a humble, repentant heart.

Lord, help me see sin as You see it. Forgive me for the times I have excused wrongdoing or resisted the conviction of Your Word. What Happened to Following Jesus?

“And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”

Following Jesus involves more than identifying ourselves as Christians.
It requires a daily commitment to surrender our lives to Him.
Jesus taught that those who follow Him must deny themselves and take up their cross daily.
This means that our desires, ambitions, and personal preferences must be submitted to His authority.
Following Christ may require difficult decisions. It may mean refusing to participate in something that dishonors Him, extending forgiveness when we would rather remain angry, or serving others when we would prefer to serve ourselves.
Christian discipleship is not simply about what we believe on Sunday. It is about how we live every day.
The question we must ask ourselves is not merely whether we know about Jesus, but whether we are faithfully following Him.

Pray for a deeper commitment to following Jesus in your decisions, relationships, and daily responsibilities.

What Happened to the Word of God?

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

God has not left us without direction.
He has given us His inspired Word to teach us what is true, reveal what is wrong, correct our behavior, and instruct us in righteous living.
Yet it is possible to own several Bibles and still neglect the truth they contain.
We may seek guidance from popular opinions, social media, friends, or personal feelings while giving little attention to what God has already said.
If Jesus Christ is truly Lord of our lives, then His Word must have authority over our beliefs and actions.
We cannot faithfully follow Christ while continually disregarding His teachings.
Make time today to read the Bible, meditate upon its truth, and ask God to help you apply it.
The Word of God is not merely a book to be displayed. It is truth to be believed and obeyed.

What Happened to Our Witness?

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is still the power of God unto salvation.
We live in a world where openly expressing biblical convictions may bring disagreement, criticism, or rejection.
Yet Paul declared that he was not ashamed of the Gospel.
Our confidence does not rest in our ability to persuade people through clever arguments. It rests in the saving power of God.
Every believer has opportunities to share the hope found in Jesus Christ.
Sometimes those opportunities come through a direct conversation about salvation. Other times, they begin with a simple act of kindness or a willingness to listen to someone who is struggling.
We must not allow fear, embarrassment, or indifference to silence our witness.
Someone in your life may be waiting for a Christian who cares enough to tell them about Jesus.
Prayer Focus
Pray for boldness to share the Gospel and for opportunities to witness to those who do not know Christ.

What Happened to Our Confidence in Christ?

The world around us is constantly changing.
Communities change. Churches experience different seasons. Families face unexpected challenges. Traditions and customs may come and go.
But Jesus Christ remains the same.
His character has not changed. His promises remain trustworthy. His power to save has not diminished.
Tomorrow, we will conclude our sermon series with the message, “The Old Paths Still Work.”
As we prepare for that message, remember that our confidence is not in a particular generation, tradition, or style of worship.
Our confidence is in the unchanging Savior and the eternal truth of His Word.
The same Christ who saved sinners in generations past is still saving sinners today.
The same Lord who sustained His people through difficult seasons is still able to sustain us.
We can face the future with confidence because our Savior has not changed.

Throughout October, we have examined the community, the church, and our relationship with Jesus Christ.
Today, we bring those thoughts together with one important truth: the old paths still work.
When God spoke through Jeremiah, He called His people to return to the good way and walk in it.
The problem was not that God had failed to provide direction. The problem was that His people refused to follow it.
The same danger exists today.
We can become so focused on finding something new that we neglect the timeless truths God has already given us.
The old paths are not simply the customs or preferences of previous generations. They are the enduring principles of God's Word.
Loving our neighbors still matters. Faithfully gathering with God's people still matters. Prayer, biblical teaching, repentance, discipleship, and proclaiming the Gospel still matter.
The world may change, but God's truth remains.
The question is not whether the old paths still work.
The question is whether we are willing to walk in them.

The Old Path of Prayer

Prayer has always been an essential part of the believer's relationship with God.
The methods we use to communicate with one another have changed dramatically, but our need to communicate with our heavenly Father has not.
Paul instructs believers to pray without ceasing.
This does not mean that we must spend every waking moment speaking words of prayer. It means maintaining a continual attitude of dependence upon God and regularly bringing our needs, concerns, and thanksgiving before Him.
Prayer should not be reserved only for emergencies.
We need to seek God in times of joy, uncertainty, sorrow, and ordinary daily responsibilities.
As we begin the final week of October, let us make a renewed commitment to personal and family prayer.
The old path of prayer still works because the God who hears and answers prayer has not changed.

The Old Path of God's Word

When we travel an unfamiliar road in darkness, we need light to guide our steps.
The psalmist describes God's Word as a lamp and a light.
Scripture provides direction for our lives by revealing God's character, teaching us His commandments, and helping us recognize the difference between truth and error.
Our world offers countless opinions about how we should live, raise our families, conduct our relationships, and determine what is right.
But God's Word remains our trustworthy guide.
We do not need to abandon biblical truth in order to navigate the challenges of modern life.
Instead, we need to study Scripture carefully and apply its principles faithfully.
The old path of God's Word still works because the truth of God does not expire.
Prayer Focus
Pray for a deeper understanding of Scripture and a willingness to obey what God teaches.
Today's Prayer
Lord, thank You for the light of Your Word. Help me seek Your guidance rather than relying only upon my own understanding. The Old Path of Teaching Our Children

God instructed His people to teach His Word diligently to their children.
Biblical instruction was not intended to be limited to a single gathering or a particular day of the week.
It was to be woven into the ordinary activities of family life.
Parents and grandparents have tremendous opportunities to influence the next generation through their words, actions, prayers, and personal examples.
The church also has an important responsibility to assist families by faithfully teaching Scripture and providing godly examples for children and teenagers.
Tonight, as our AWANA ministry gathers, let us remember that we are investing in more than a weekly program.
We are helping children learn truths that can guide them throughout their lives.
The old path of teaching God's Word to the next generation still works.

The Old Path of Faithful Service

Serving the Lord is not always easy.
There will be seasons when we become tired, discouraged, or uncertain whether our efforts are making a difference.
Paul reminds believers that their labor in the Lord is not in vain.
Every faithful act of service matters, even when the results are not immediately visible.
The person who teaches a child, visits someone who is sick, prepares a meal for a struggling family, or faithfully prays for others may never fully realize the impact of that service.
But God sees every act of faithfulness.
As we approach the end of October, let us renew our commitment to serving the Lord with willing hearts.
The old path of faithful service still works because God continues to use ordinary people who are willing to obey Him.

The methods we use to communicate have changed, but the message of salvation has not.
People still need to hear that Jesus Christ died for their sins, was buried, and rose again.
They still need to understand that salvation is available through faith in Him.
Paul reminds us that people cannot believe in a Savior of whom they have never heard.
That is why the church must remain committed to proclaiming the Gospel.
We can use modern technology, community outreach, personal conversations, and countless other opportunities to reach people, but the message itself must remain faithful to Scripture.
The old path of sharing the Gospel still works because Jesus Christ is still the only Savior.
As we approach the end of October, let us remember that our responsibility to reach the lost does not end with a sermon series or a month of prayer.
Every day presents new opportunities to share the hope of salvation with someone who needs Jesus.

The Old Paths Still Work — Will We Walk in Them?

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

For the past 31 days, we have examined some important questions.
What happened to the community?
What happened to the church?
What happened to our Christ?
And do the old paths still work?
Throughout this month, God's Word has reminded us that the answer is not found in simply longing for the past.
The answer is found in returning to the unchanging truths of Scripture and faithfully putting them into practice.
James reminds us that hearing God's Word is not enough. We must become doers of the Word.
It is possible to spend an entire month reading Scripture, praying, and reflecting upon spiritual truths without allowing those truths to change the way we live.
As October comes to an end, do not allow the lessons of this month to end with it.
Continue loving your neighbors.
Continue strengthening your family.
Continue serving your church.
Continue sharing the Gospel.
Continue making Jesus Christ the center of your life.
Tomorrow, we will enter a new month and gather once again for worship. Let us carry the lessons of October into November with a renewed commitment to serving the Lord.
May our commitment to the old paths be evident not merely in what we say, but in the way we live.
The old paths still work.
The question is: Will we walk in them?

Heavenly Father, thank You for guiding us through these 31 days of prayer and devotion. Thank You for the unchanging truth of Your Word and the salvation we have through Jesus Christ.
Forgive us for the times we have neglected our responsibilities to our families, our church, and our community. Help us become doers of Your Word and not hearers only.
As we prepare to enter a new month, help us remain faithful to the commitments we have made. Strengthen our families, unite our church, burden our hearts for the lost, and keep Jesus Christ at the center of everything we do.
Prepare our hearts for tomorrow's worship. May we gather with a renewed desire to hear Your Word, encourage one another, and faithfully serve You.
